Test TC-87A - Speed Control Switch Always Low
NOTE:
For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION in TESTS W/CODES
article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS
article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section.
- Record all DTC's and freeze frame data. Using scan tool, erase DTC's. Using scan tool, read speed control switch volts. If voltage is less than one volt, go to step 3). If voltage is one volt or more, go to next step.
- Condition to set trouble code is not present at this time. SPEED CONTROL SWITCH ALWAYS LOW DTC sets if speed control switch voltage is less than 4.5 volts for 2 minutes. Possible causes are: speed control switch circuit shorted, Powertrain Control Module (PCM) failure, open speed control switch ground circuit, or open or shorted speed control switch. See INACTIVE TROUBLE CODE CONDITION in TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. Test is complete. Perform TEST SC-VER .
- Disconnect speed control switch 2-pin clockspring connector. Observe scan tool voltage reading. If voltage changed to 5 volts, replace speed control switch. Perform TEST SC-VER . If voltage did not change to 5 volts, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Using a ohmmeter, check resistance between speed control switch 2-pin clockspring connector terminals (measure resistance on 2-pin clockspring connector steering wheel switch side). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground on speed control switch signal circuit Red/Light Green wire (JA and JX bodies) or White wire (LH and PL bodies). Perform TEST SC-VER .
- Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector. Using a ohmmeter, check resistance of PCM connector terminal No. 41. See PCM CONNECTOR WIRE IDENTIFICATION table. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground on PCM connector terminal No. 41. Perform TEST SC-VER . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace PCM. Perform TEST SC-VER .
