Total Pinion Torque

Adjust total pinion torque by first placing rack in center position. Using Rack Support Wrench (MB991204), tighten rack support cover screw to 11 ft. lbs. (15 N.m). Using Preload Socket (CT-1108), rotate pinion shaft clockwise one full turn within 4-6 seconds. Back off rack support cover screw 30-60 degrees and adjust torque to 6-12 INCH lbs. (0.7-1.4 N.m), with an allowable change in torque of 3 INCH lbs. (0.4 N.m). Lock rack support cover screw with lock nut.

NOTE: When adjusting pinion torque, set to highest torque value given. If torque cannot be adjusted within specification, check rack support cover components or replace. Ensure there is no catching or ratcheting when rack is operated toward shaft direction.
