Entering On-Board Diagnostics

NOTE: DO NOT skip any steps in self-diagnostic tests or incorrect diagnosis may result. Ensure self-diagnostic test apply to vehicle being tested.

Although other scan tools are available, manufacturers recommend using Multi-Use Tester II (MUT II) scan tool to retrieve trouble codes. If using scan tool, proceed to USING SCAN TOOL .

If scan tool is not available, trouble codes may be retrieved on most models using Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) or a voltmeter. See RETRIEVING TROUBLE CODES table for code retrieval method available by model and proceed to appropriate method.
