Steering Wheel Turning Force

  1. With vehicle stopped on a flat, paved surface, turn steering wheel to straight ahead position. Start engine and temporarily adjust idle speed to 900-1100 RPM.
  2. Attach spring scale to outer rim of steering wheel and measure force necessary to turn from straight-ahead position to left and right. Turn steering wheel less than 1 1/2 turns from straight ahead position. Steering effort should be 8 lbs. (3.63 kg) with 1.3 lbs. (.59 kg) fluctuation.
