Steering Column Overhaul: Reassembly

  1. To reassemble, reverse disassembly procedure. Apply light coat of multipurpose grease to sliding area of bearing prior to installation in lower column tube. Install oil seal in bottom of lower column tube.
  2. Apply light coat of multipurpose grease on both bearing spacer-to-steering shaft surfaces before installing. Install tube clamp so edge of clamp is positioned .73-.81" (18.5-20.5 mm) from edge of upper column tube, and end of steering shaft is properly positioned. See Fig 1.

  3. When installing steering lock and steering lock bracket, temporarily install steering lock, using NEW bolts, in alignment with boss area on steering column.
  4. Ensure steering lock operates properly, locking steering shaft. If steering lock operates correctly, tighten retaining bolts until bolt heads twist off.
  5. Install cover assembly on intermediate shaft. Fill inside of bearing with multipurpose grease. Install bearings on intermediate shaft. Wrap tape around outer diameter (concave surface) of bearing about 1 1/2 times. Press bearings in cover assembly. Apply multipurpose grease on intermediate shaft-to-cover assembly contact areas.
