Steering Column Overhaul: Disassembly

  1. Remove boot, cover assembly and bearing. See Figure. Remove intermediate shaft. Remove combination switch. Using hacksaw, cut steering lock-to-steering lock bracket bolts at bracket side; remove bolts. Disconnect electrical connection and remove steering lock.
  2. Remove snap ring, stopper and bearing spacer from top of steering shaft. Remove tube clamp, upper column tube and steering shaft. Remove bearing spacer and column bushing.
  3. Remove lower column tube. Using a socket with O.D. of 1.18" (30.0 mm), tap bearing from lower column tube. Remove snap ring. Tap on clevis pin from inside of lower column tube until clevis pin is removed. Remove bushing and lower bracket.
