Steering Column: Disassembly
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in the STEERING section. Remove steering column. See FIXED & TILT STEERING COLUMNS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Remove rear covers from shroud pods. Remove lower cover-to-shroud bracket screw. Carefully separate lower and upper covers by removing upper cover tab fasteners from lower cover notches. Remove 2 shroud bracket-to-upper cover screws. Remove upper shroud cover.
- Slide upper shroud cover over gearshift lever. Remove control modules from shroud. Detach key/lock cylinder bezel from shroud. Cover tilt lever stalk with shop towel and remove lever with pliers. Remove shroud from bracket.
- Remove canceling cam and wave washer from turn signal switch. Remove turn signal switch from switch adapter.
- Remove shroud bracket. Remove ignition switch from key/lock cylinder housing. Turn ignition key to unmarked position. Press lock tab and remove key/lock cylinder. Remove turn signal switch adapter from steering column housing.CAUTION: Steering shaft retaining ring and upper bearing spring retainer compress strong spring tension from upper bearing spring. DO NOT remove retaining without relieving spring tension.
- Remove upper steering shaft retaining ring, upper bearing spring retainer and upper bearing spring. Position Adapter (J-35899) on spring retainer. See Fig 1. Thread Compressor (J-23653A) onto steering column shaft. Tighten spring compressor nut to compress bearing retainer spring. Remove and discard snap ring. Loosen spring compressor nut. Remove spring compressor and adapter. Remove bearing retainer and spring.
- On column shift models, remove gearshift cable by pressing in retaining tab. See Figure. Temporarily remove tilt lever. Center punch and drill out lock cylinder shear bolts until drill bit reaches washers.
- Remove lock cylinder housing. Using pliers, remove drilled-out bolts. Install tilt lever. Place column in full up position. Insert large Phillips screwdriver into tilt spring retainer recess.CAUTION: Exercise extreme care when removing tilt spring retainer. Spring is under extreme pressure. The Phillips screwdriver tip should be large enough to snugly fit into cross-shaped retainer recess.
- Press retainer inward and turn it clockwise to remove retainer and spring. Place column in center position. Using Puller (J-21854-1), remove housing pivot pins. Move tilt lever to disengage lock shoes.
- Slide housing off support. DO NOT strike shaft to remove. Pull steering shafts out of column support and jacket. Remove 4 steering column support Torx-head screws. Remove support from column.
- Separate steering shafts. Pivot upper and lower shafts to a 90 degree angle and separate at flexible joint.
