Steering Column Overhaul: Reassembly

  1. Lubricate column bearings. Install support on column. Install and tighten support-to-column attaching screws. Install centering spheres in upper and lower steering shafts. Connect upper and lower shafts.
  2. Install snap ring to centering spheres. Slide steering shaft assembly into column from support side. Position housing over shaft and onto support.
  3. Retract tilt lock shoes by pulling on tilt lever to align pivot pin holes. Insert pivot pins. Using hammer and drift, seat pivot pins. Using hammer and punch, stake each pivot pin in 2 places.
  4. Install tilt spring in column. Place retainer on spring. Insert large Phillips screwdriver into retainer. Push retainer in and turn it counterclockwise to lock in position.
  5. Place ignition lock cylinder housing on tilt housing. Install and tighten new shear bolts until heads break off. On column shift models, press tab to install shift cable in housing. See Fig 3.
  6. Slide race, seat and spring on steering shaft. Position Adapter (J-35899) on shaft. Thread Compressor (J-23653A) onto the shaft. See Figure.
  7. Tighten compressor nut to compress spring. Install snap ring into second groove of steering shaft. Loosen compressor nut. Remove compressor and adapter.

  8. Install shroud mounting bracket on column. Install turn signal switch adapter and turn signal switch. Install wave washer and canceling cam.
  9. With key in lock cylinder, turn key to unmarked position. Install lock cylinder into housing. Install ignition switch. Route headlight pod connector through housing and along bottom of column.
  10. Push headlight pod into housing. Install and tighten headlight pod retaining screws. Install tie wraps to hold harness to column. Connect headlight pod connector to steering column connector.
  11. Install steering column. See STEERING COLUMN R & I  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Install steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in the STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in this section.
  12. Ensure proper operation of steering column, column shifter (if equipped), ignition switch and headlight pod switches.
