Pump, Water: Removal

The water pump on 3.6L engines is bolted directly to the engine timing chain case cover.

WARNING:

Constant tension hose clamps are used on most cooling system hoses. When removing or installing, use only tools designed for servicing this type of clamp. Always wear safety glasses when servicing constant tension clamps.

CAUTION:

A number or letter is stamped into the tongue of constant tension clamps. If replacement is necessary, use only an original equipment clamp with matching number or letter.

  1. Remove the air cleaner resonator assembly. Refer to RESONATOR, AIR CLEANER, REMOVAL .
  2. Remove the air cleaner body. Refer to BODY, AIR CLEANER, REMOVAL .
  3. Remove the serpentine belt. Refer to BELT, SERPENTINE, REMOVAL .
  4. Support the engine with a suitable jack.
  5. Remove the right side engine mount. Refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, REAR, REMOVAL .

  6. Remove the upper idler pulley bolt and the upper idler pulley (4).
    CAUTION:

    Do not pry on the water pump at the timing chain case/cover. The machined surfaces may be damaged resulting in leaks.

  7. Remove the twelve water pump mounting bolts. Take notice to the four water pump bolts (2) that mount directly to the timing chain cover.
  8. Remove the water pump (1) and discard seal.
