Removal And Installation: Removal
WARNING:
To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.
- Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
- Remove the steering wheel from the steering column. Refer to WHEEL, STEERING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the steering column switch and clockspring assembly from the steering column. Refer to CLOCKSPRING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors (2, 3 and 4) from the ignition switch (1).
- Remove the security ring (2) from the ignition switch (1). The ring will hang in the vehicle.
- Insert the key (2) and turn the key cylinder (3) to the RUN position.
- Insert an appropriate tool into the slot (1) formed into the lock cylinder housing depressing the key cylinder retaining tab.
- Pull the key cylinder and key straight out of the lock cylinder housing as one unit.
- Protect the steering column assembly with a cover, exposing only the ignition switch retaining bolts (2).
- Using an appropriate cutting tool, cut slots in each retaining bolt (2).
- Using the slots created in the previous step, remove the retaining bolts (2) and the ignition switch (1).
- If replacing the ignition switch, the bracket for the key interlock solenoid connector will need to be transferred to the new switch.
