Axle Shafts: HALFSHAFT: Removal
CAUTION:
Never allow the halfshaft to hang unsupported from the transaxle or knuckle. Never set the halfshaft on the floor or a hard surface. Place the halfshaft on a safe, soft surface only to minimize damage to the boot.
NOTE:
Never grasp the halfshaft assembly by the inner or outer boots doing so may damage to the boot.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Remove the wheel and tire assembly from the vehicle. Refer to REMOVAL
.
- Using a suitable punch, lift the two staked areas in the hub nut (2) to avoid damaging the halfshaft.
- With the vehicle's brakes applied to keep hub from turning, loosen the halfshaft nut (1).
- Remove the nut (1) from the halfshaft (2) and discard the nut. The halfshaft nut is not reusable.
- Remove the stabilizer bar link nut (5), washer (4) and bushing (3) at lower control arm.
- Remove the two front disc brake caliper attaching bolts (1).
- Remove the disc brake caliper assembly.
- Support disc brake caliper assembly by using a wire hook (4) and suspending it from the strut assembly (5). Do not allow the brake caliper assembly to hang by the brake flex hose (2).
- Detach brake hose from routing bracket on strut.
- Detach wheel speed sensor and brake wear sensor wires from routing bracket on strut.
- Remove the ball joint nut (3) and washer (2) and pull the lower control arm away from the steering knuckle.NOTE:
Care must be taken not to separate the inner C/V joint during this operation. Do not allow halfshaft to hang by inner C/V joint after removing outer C/V Joint from the hub/bearing assembly in steering knuckle, end of halfshaft must be supported.
- Pull steering knuckle assembly away from the outer C/V joint of the halfshaft assembly while pulling the joint out of the hub bearing.
- Support the outer end of the left halfshaft assembly. Insert a pry bar (3) between inner tripod joint (1) and transaxle case (2). Pry against inner tripod joint (1), until tripod joint retaining snap-ring is disengaged from transaxle side gear.
- Pull the lower control arm away from the steering knuckle.
- If equipped with a gasoline engine, pull steering knuckle assembly away from the outer C/V joint of the halfshaft assembly while pulling the joint out of the intermediate shaft (if equipped) or the transmission.NOTE:
If equipped with a diesel engine, the right side halfshaft and intermediate shaft are removed as an assembly.
- If equipped with a diesel engine, remove nuts retaining the intermediate shaft bearing to the bracket (4).
- If equipped with a gasoline engine, remove the three bolts (1) holding the mid-shaft bearing (2) to the block.
- Remove the intermediate shaft.
