Axle Shafts: HALFSHAFT: Removal

CAUTION:

Never allow the halfshaft to hang unsupported from the transaxle or knuckle. Never set the halfshaft on the floor or a hard surface. Place the halfshaft on a safe, soft surface only to minimize damage to the boot.

NOTE:

Never grasp the halfshaft assembly by the inner or outer boots doing so may damage to the boot.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly from the vehicle. Refer to REMOVAL .

  3. Using a suitable punch, lift the two staked areas in the hub nut (2) to avoid damaging the halfshaft.

  4. With the vehicle's brakes applied to keep hub from turning, loosen the halfshaft nut (1).
  5. Remove the nut (1) from the halfshaft (2) and discard the nut. The halfshaft nut is not reusable.

  6. Remove the stabilizer bar link nut (5), washer (4) and bushing (3) at lower control arm.

  7. Remove the two front disc brake caliper attaching bolts (1).

  8. Remove the disc brake caliper assembly.
  9. Support disc brake caliper assembly by using a wire hook (4) and suspending it from the strut assembly (5). Do not allow the brake caliper assembly to hang by the brake flex hose (2). 
  10. Detach brake hose from routing bracket on strut.
  11. Detach wheel speed sensor and brake wear sensor wires from routing bracket on strut.

  12. Remove the ball joint nut (3) and washer (2) and pull the lower control arm away from the steering knuckle.
    NOTE:

    Care must be taken not to separate the inner C/V joint during this operation. Do not allow halfshaft to hang by inner C/V joint after removing outer C/V Joint from the hub/bearing assembly in steering knuckle, end of halfshaft must be supported.

  13. Pull steering knuckle assembly away from the outer C/V joint of the halfshaft assembly while pulling the joint out of the hub bearing.

  14. Support the outer end of the left halfshaft assembly. Insert a pry bar (3) between inner tripod joint (1) and transaxle case (2). Pry against inner tripod joint (1), until tripod joint retaining snap-ring is disengaged from transaxle side gear.
  15. Pull the lower control arm away from the steering knuckle.
  16. If equipped with a gasoline engine, pull steering knuckle assembly away from the outer C/V joint of the halfshaft assembly while pulling the joint out of the intermediate shaft (if equipped) or the transmission.
    NOTE:

    If equipped with a diesel engine, the right side halfshaft and intermediate shaft are removed as an assembly.

  17. If equipped with a diesel engine, remove nuts retaining the intermediate shaft bearing to the bracket (4).

  18. If equipped with a gasoline engine, remove the three bolts (1) holding the mid-shaft bearing (2) to the block.
  19. Remove the intermediate shaft.
