CROSSMEMBER, Front Suspension: Installation

  1. If necessary, install the stabilizer bar. Refer to STABILIZER BAR, FRONT, INSTALLATION .
  2. If necessary, install the steering gear. Refer to GEAR, INSTALLATION .
  3. Raise the crossmember into position.
  4. Install the six bolts (1) securing the crossmember to the body. Tighten the front crossmember bolts to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  5. On each side of the vehicle, install the front crossmember bolts (2). Tighten the front crossmember bolts to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  6. On the right side of the vehicle, install the bolt securing the lower underbody shield to the crossmember and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  7. Install the rear side transmission strut mount bolt (3) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  8. Position the power steering pressure and return line routing clamps on the rear of the crossmember and install the screws. Tighten the screws to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  9. Install the pressure and return lines (3) to the steering gear. Tighten the lines to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  10. Install the steering gear heat shield and the four bolts (2) to the steering gear. Tighten the steering gear heat shield bolts to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  11. On both sides of vehicle, install the lower control arms to the ball joints (1).
  12. Install a NEW  nut (3) attaching the lower control arm to the ball joint, by holding the rod end stud stationary while tightening the nut with a wrench. Using a crowfoot wrench on a torque wrench, tighten the ball joint to lower control arm nuts to the proper torque specification. Refer to FRONT, TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  13. On both sides of vehicle, install each outer tie rod end (1) to the knuckle.

  14. Install a NEW  nut (3) attaching outer tie rod (1) to the knuckle, by holding the rod end stud stationary while tightening the nut with a wrench. Using a crowfoot wrench on a torque wrench, tighten the outer tie rod to knuckle nuts to the proper torque specification. Refer to FRONT, TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  15. At each end of stabilizer bar (1), install the nut (2) securing the link (3) to the lower control arm. Tighten the stabilizer bar link to lower control arm nuts to the proper torque specification. Refer to FRONT, TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  16. On each side of vehicle, install the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to INSTALLATION .
  17. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.

  18. Slide the intermediate shaft (1) onto the steering gear shaft.
  19. Install the pinch bolt (2) securing intermediate shaft (1) to the steering gear shaft. Tighten the intermediate shaft coupling pinch bolt to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .

  20. Connect the negative battery cable on the negative battery post and secure the clamp lever (1).
  21. Install the battery access cover.
  22. Remove the steering wheel holder.
  23. Fill and bleed power steering system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  24. Inspect for leaks.
  25. Set the toe to specifications. Refer to WHEEL ALIGNMENT, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
