Automatic Transmission (Service Information): Removal
- Disconnect the negative cable at the battery.
- Open hood.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Drain the coolant. Refer to DRAINING .
- Remove the half shafts. Refer to REMOVAL .
- Remove the exhaust cross under pipe. Refer to PIPE, EXHAUST CROSSUNDER, REMOVAL .
- Remove the rear engine mount.
- Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVAL
.
- Remove the torque converter bolts (1).
- Disconnect the output speed sensor harness connectors (1 and 2).
- Remove ground wire at rear of transmission.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the coolant bottle. Refer to BOTTLE, PRESSURIZED COOLANT, REMOVAL .
- Remove coolant reservoir mounting bracket fasteners and position bracket aside.
- Disconnect the shifter cable from the transmission lever (3).
- Remove the two bolts that secure the shifter cable and bracket (1) to the transmission and position aside.
- Remove ground wire from transmission stud bolt.
- Remove the 4 upper transmission to engine block fasteners (1 and 2).
- Remove upper transmission mount bolt (2).
- Disconnect turbine speed sensor harness connector (5).
- Disconnect oil cooler lines at transmission (4).
- Disconnect the solenoid pack connector (2) at the transmission.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Support the engine (3).
- Position a suitable transmission jack under transmission and secure transmission to jack (1).CAUTION:
Do not reuse fasteners. Reusing fasteners and not installing new fasteners tightened to the proper torque specifications may lead to catastrophic failure.
- Remove and
DISCARD
the four bolts (1) holding left mount (2) to the transmission (3).
NOTE:Photo depicts transmission removed for clarity.
- Remove transmission-to-engine bolt near valve body oil pan (1).
- Remove the five engine-to-transmission lower bolts (2).
- Remove the two remaining lower bellhousing bolts.
- Lower transmission from engine compartment.
