Pump, Fuel Injection: Operation
High-pressure lines deliver diesel fuel under extreme pressure from the injection pump to the fuel injectors. This may be as high as 2000 bar (29, 008 psi). Use extreme caution when inspecting for high-pressure fuel leaks. Fuel under this amount of pressure can penetrate skin causing personal injury or death. Inspect for high-pressure fuel leaks with a sheet of cardboard. Wear safety goggles and adequate protective clothing when servicing fuel system.
The fuel injection pump is driven by the timing chain and requires timing. Fuel that enters the fuel injection pump is pressurized between 200-2000 bar (2, 900 - 29, 008 psi). The pressurized fuel is then supplied to the fuel rail. The high pressure pump sprocket is located behind the pump. Fuel passages and control elements in the flange regulate the flow of fuel to the high pressure pumping chambers, and control the lubrication of the pump.
The high pressure pump must not be disassembled or opened. The only serviceable items are the Cascade overflow valve and the fuel quantity solenoid.
Cranking the engine for an extended time without a fuel supply may damage the fuel injection pressure pump.
