NOTE:

If the flywheel (1) is replaced or removed apply thread sealer to the flywheel retaining bolts. This will prevent engine oil from leaking onto the clutch. Inspect the flywheel friction surface for deep grooving or warping. Discoloration is not an indication of damage. Replace the flywheel if damage to the friction surface or starter ring gear is evident. The flywheel cannot be resurfaced.

  1. Insert Clutch Tool (special tool #10018, Clutch Alignment Tool) (2) into pilot bearing.

  2. Install independent clutch disc over clutch tool (2) up against flywheel.
  3. Install pressure plate assembly over clutch tool (2) up against flywheel with index marks aligned and onto the dowel pins next to each bolt location.
    NOTE:

If a new clutch or flywheel is being installed, align the cover balance spot as close as possible to the flywheel balance orange spot.

    NOTE:

Do Not reuse the original bolts when installing the clutch cover. Replace the bolts whenever the clutch is removed.

  4. Install the bolts (1) to hold the clutch cover plate to the flywheel.

  5. A few turns at a time, tighten the bolts (1 through 6) to hold the clutch cover plate to the flywheel in the pattern illustrated until bolts are seated. Verify that the tool 10018 slides smoothly out and back into the pilot bearing. If not, loosen the cover plate bolts and reposition the clutch discs and tighten the bolts again in the same fashion.
    NOTE:

If the tool 10018 does not slide out and in smoothly the transmission will not seat against the bellhousing during installation.

  6. Then tighten bolts in same pattern to specification. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS .
  7. Remove the clutch disc alignment tool 10018.
  8. Install the bellhousing and transmission.
