Arm, Upper Control: Removal

NOTE:

Review all Warnings and Cautions. Refer to WARNING .

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  2. Remove wheel and tire assembly. Refer to REMOVAL .
  3. Remove brake caliper from knuckle and hang out of the way, then remove brake rotor. Refer to ROTOR, BRAKE, REMOVAL .

    1 - KNUCKLE
    2 - WHEEL SPEED SENSOR
    3 - MOUNTING BOLT
  4. Remove bolt (3) fastening ABS wheel speed sensor head (2) to steering knuckle (1). Remove sensor head from knuckle.
    CAUTION:

    Do not strike or apply heat to steering knuckle in an effort to separate ball joint studs from steering knuckle.

    CAUTION:

    When releasing ball joint from knuckle using Puller (2), Special Tool C-4150A, use care not to pinch and damage ball joint grease seal.

    1 - UPPER BALL JOINT COTTER PIN
    2 - LOWER BALL JOINT COTTER PIN
    3 - TIE ROD NUT
    4 - LOWER BALL JOINT NUT
    5 - KNUCKLE (WITH HUB AND BEARING)
    6 - UPPER BALL JOINT NUT
  5. Remove cotter pin (1) and castle nut (6) from upper ball joint stud.
  6. Install Puller, Special Tool (special tool #C-4150A, Press, Ball Joint), and release upper ball joint from knuckle. Ball bearing in bolt of Special Tool  (special tool #C-4150A, Press, Ball Joint) must be centered in end of lower ball joint stud.

    1 - UPPER CONTROL ARM
    2 - CAM BOLT
    3 - CAM WASHER
    4 - STABILIZER BAR LINK
    5 - LOWER CONTROL ARM
    6 - SHOCK ASSEMBLY
  7. Remove nuts and bolts attaching upper control arm (1) to mounting brackets on frame rail. Slightly spread ends of mounting brackets to ease removal of control arm from brackets.
  8. Remove upper control arm (1).
