Knuckle, Steering: Installation

  1. If tone wheel seal (1) is missing or damaged, install a new seal. Refer to SEAL, TONE WHEEL, INSTALLATION .
    NOTE:

    If hub and bearing is removed from knuckle, perform the next five steps before installing the knuckle.

    CAUTION:

    A special corrosion prevention gasket (1) must be installed between the hub and bearing and the steering knuckle. The gasket is required to prevent galvanic corrosion between the hub and bearing and the steering knuckle.

  2. Install a new corrosion prevention gasket (1) on hub and bearing mounting flange (2).

  3. Install hub and bearing (with gasket) in steering knuckle (1). Align holes in corrosion prevention gasket with holes in hub and bearing, and knuckle.
  4. Install four hub and bearing mounting bolts (3) and tighten mounting bolts to the proper specifications. Refer to FRONT, SPECIFICATIONS .

  5. Install ABS wheel speed sensor tone wheel (4) and tighten mounting bolt (5) to the proper specifications. Refer to ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM FASTENER TORQUE .

    NOTE:

    Lubricate ball joint, if applicable. Lubricate ball joint assembly using Mopar® Multi-Mileage Lube or equivalent.

  6. Install steering knuckle (5) on lower ball joint stud. Loosely install castle nut (4) on stud.
  7. Install steering knuckle (5) on upper ball joint stud. Loosely install castle nut (6) on stud.
  8. Install outer tie rod onto steering knuckle. Install a NEW  tie rod nut (3). Do not tighten at this time.

  9. Install ABS wheel speed sensor head (2) in steering knuckle (1). Install and tighten mounting bolt (3) to the proper specifications. Refer to ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM FASTENER TORQUE .
  10. Install brake rotor and brake caliper on knuckle. Refer to ROTOR, BRAKE, INSTALLATION .
  11. Install wheel and tire assembly Refer to INSTALLATION .
  12. Lower vehicle.
  13. Position vehicle on alignment rack/drive-on hoist.

    NOTE:

    On models equipped with six piston calipers the calipers need to be unbolted from the knuckle and hung out of the way so that the suspension height stands can be installed correctly.

  14. Remove tire and wheels assemblies and install (special tool #9096, Height Stands, Suspension) (1) onto the hub and bearing assembly (2) and tighten to the proper specifications. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS .
  15. Set vehicle to curb height. Refer to CURB HEIGHT MEASUREMENT  .
  16. Tighten outer tie rod end to the knuckle nut to the proper specifications. Refer to FRONT, SPECIFICATIONS .
  17. Tighten upper ball joint castle nut (6) to the proper specifications. Refer to FRONT, SPECIFICATIONS . Once nut is tightened to specified torque, it may be necessary to continue tightening nut to allow installation of cotter pin through nut castle and hole in ball joint stud (DO NOT LOOSEN NUT). 
  18. Install cotter pin (1) through upper ball joint castle nut and stud.
  19. Tighten lower ball joint castle nut (4) to the proper specifications. Refer to FRONT, SPECIFICATIONS . Once nut is tightened to specified torque, it may be necessary to continue tightening nut to allow installation of cotter pin through nut castle and hole in ball joint stud (DO NOT LOOSEN NUT). 
  20. Install cotter pin (2) through lower ball joint castle nut and stud.
    NOTE:

    On models equipped with six piston calipers the calipers need to be reinstalled onto the knuckle and tighten the two mounting bolts to the proper specifications. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS  .

  21. Remove the special tool and install the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to INSTALLATION .
  22. Perform wheel alignment Refer to WHEEL ALIGNMENT  .
  23. Road test vehicle to ensure proper operation.
