Diagnostic Test
- DETERMINE ACTIVE OR STORED DTC NOTE: Ensure that the battery is fully charged.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, read ORC DTC.
SELECT ACTIVE or STORED DTC:
ACTIVE DTC
- Go to step 2
STORED DTC
- Perform *RESTRAINTS SYSTEM INTERMITTENT TEST. See DTC-Based Diagnostics/CONTROLLER, Occupant Restraint (ORC) - Standard Procedure .
- VERIFY LEFT SIDE IMPACT SENSOR 1 SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORT TO VOLTAGE WARNING: Turn the ignition off, disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Disconnect the ORC connectors.
- Disconnect the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 connector.NOTE: Check connectors - Clean and repair as necessary.
- Connect the Load Tool ORC 8443-28 Adapter to the ORC connector.WARNING: Turn the ignition on, then reconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Measure the voltage of the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 Signal circuit between the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 connector cavity 1 and ground.
Is there any voltage present?
Yes
- Repair the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 Signal circuit for a short to voltage.
- Perform *RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. See DTC-Based Diagnostics/CONTROLLER, Occupant Restraint (ORC) - Standard Procedure
No
- Go to step 3
- VERIFY LEFT SIDE IMPACT SENSOR 1 SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND WARNING: Turn the ignition off, disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Measure the resistance of the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 Signal circuit between the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 connector cavity 1 and ground.
Is the resistance below 100k ohms?
Yes
- Repair the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 Signal circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform *RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. See DTC-Based Diagnostics/CONTROLLER, Occupant Restraint (ORC) - Standard Procedure
No
- Go to step 4
- Measure the resistance of the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 Signal circuit between the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 connector cavity 1 and ground.
- VERIFY LEFT SIDE IMPACT SENSOR 1 SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORT TO CIRCUIT GROUND
- Measure the resistance between the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 Signal circuit cavity 1 and the Ground circuit cavity 2 of the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 connector.
Is the resistance below 100k ohms?
Yes
- Repair the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 Signal circuit for a short to the Ground circuit.
- Perform *RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. See DTC-Based Diagnostics/CONTROLLER, Occupant Restraint (ORC) - Standard Procedure
No
- Go to step 5
- Measure the resistance between the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 Signal circuit cavity 1 and the Ground circuit cavity 2 of the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 connector.
- CHECK THE LEFT SIDE IMPACT SENSOR 1 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the resistance of the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 Signal circuit between the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 connector cavity 1 and the ORC 8443-28 Adaptor cavity C1A-29.
Is the resistance below 1.0 ohm?
Yes
- Go to step 6
No
- Repair the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform *RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. See DTC-Based Diagnostics/CONTROLLER, Occupant Restraint (ORC) - Standard Procedure
- Measure the resistance of the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 Signal circuit between the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 connector cavity 1 and the ORC 8443-28 Adaptor cavity C1A-29.
- VERIFY OPEN GROUND CIRCUIT
- Measure the resistance of the Ground circuit between the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 connector cavity 2 and ground.
Is the resistance below 1.0 ohm?
Yes
- Go to step 7
No
- Repair the Ground circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform *RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. See DTC-Based Diagnostics/CONTROLLER, Occupant Restraint (ORC) - Standard Procedure
- Measure the resistance of the Ground circuit between the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 connector cavity 2 and ground.
- REPLACE THE LEFT SIDE IMPACT SENSOR
- Replace the Left Side Impact Sensor 1 in accordance with the Service Information.
- Remove any special tools or jumper wires and reconnect all previously disconnected components - except the Battery.WARNING: Turn the ignition on, then reconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTC in all Restraint System Modules.
- Turn the Ignition off, wait 15 seconds, then turn the Ignition on.
- Wait one minute before proceeding.
- With the scan tool, read active ORC DTC.
Does the scan tool display: 9087-LEFT SIDE IMPACT SENSOR 1 PERFORMANCE?
Yes
- Replace the ORC in accordance with the Service information.
- Perform *RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. See DTC-Based Diagnostics/CONTROLLER, Occupant Restraint (ORC) - Standard Procedure
WARNING: If the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) is dropped at any time, it must be replaced. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment and serious or fatal injury.WARNING: Turn the ignition off, disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding.
