Steering System: Gear: Installation: Installation
NOTE:
Before installing gear inspect the bushings and replace if worn or damaged, also use new gear mounting bolts and nuts.
- With the steering gear in the full right position (as in removal), install steering gear (7) to the vehicle and tighten the mounting nuts and bolts (4, 6) to 258 N.m (190 ft. lbs.). After tightening the fasteners, re-center the steering gear.
- Install power steering lines to steering gear and tighten the pressure hose to 37 N.m (27 ft. lbs.) and tighten the return hose to 65 N.m (48 ft. lbs.). See Steering/Pump/HOSE, Power Steering - Installation .
CAUTION: The steering gear must be centered prior to installing the coupler to prevent clockspring damage.
- Slide the shaft coupler (1) onto gear (3). Install a new lower pinch bolt (2) and tighten to 57 N.m (42 ft. lbs.).
- Clean tie rod end studs and knuckle tapers (5).
- Install tie rod ends (2) into the steering knuckles (5) and tighten the nuts (1) to 75 N.m (55 ft. lbs.). See Steering/Linkage/END, Tie Rod - Installation .
- Install the Y-pipe (3) 3.7L and 4.7L engines only .
- Install the front crossmember (2). Refer to Frame and Bumpers/Frame/CROSSMEMBER - Installation .
- Install the front tires.
- Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
- Unlock the steering wheel.
- Fill system with fluid. See Steering - Standard Procedure .
- Adjust the toe position. Refer to Front Suspension/Wheel Alignment - Standard Procedure .
