Rack & Pinion Power Steering System: Column: Installation
NOTE:
Before proceeding, (Refer to STEERING/COLUMN - WARNING) and (Refer to ELECTRICAL/RESTRAINTS/DRIVER AIRBAG - REMOVAL)
.
NOTE:
Make sure the front wheels of the vehicle are still in the STRAIGHT AHEAD position before beginning the column installation procedure.
- If removed, install the ignition key lock cylinder (Refer to STEERING/COLUMN/KEY/LOCK CYLINDER - INSTALLATION) .
- If removed, install the halo on the ignition key cylinder housing. See Figure.
- If removed, install SKIM. See Figure. Install the mounting screw fastening the SKIM to the ignition key cylinder housing. Tighten the screw to 4 N.m (30 in. lbs.) torque.
- If removed, slide the multifunction switch mounting housing onto the column. See Figure.
- If multifunction switch mounting housing is being installed, install the set-screw fastening the housing to the column. See Figure. Tighten the set-screw to 14 N.m (124 in. lbs.) torque.
- Install the steering column. See Figure. Slide the column lower mounting slots over the lower mounting studs (with nuts started) first, then lift column into place over the upper mounting studs.
- Install the two upper mounting nuts. See Figure. Tighten the two upper mounting nuts, then the two lower mounting nuts to 12 N.m (105 in. lbs.) torque.
- Match the column shaft coupling to the intermediate shaft and install the pinch bolt. See Figure. Tighten the pinch bolt nut to 28 N.m (250 in. lbs.) torque. Install the hair pin in the end of the pinch bolt.
- Feed the shift cable through the bracket on the column, then install the clip fastening the cable housing to the bracket. See Figure.
- Connect the shift cable to the lever pin. See Figure.
- Install the screw fastening the horn ground wire to the column. See Figure. Tighten the screw to 7 N.m (60 in. lbs.) torque.
- If equipped with Sentry Key Immobilizer, connect the wiring connector to the SKIM. See Figure.
- Connect the column harness wiring connectors for the clockspring and SQUIB. See Figure.
- Connect the column harness wiring connector for the multifunction switch. See Figure.
- Connect the column harness wiring connectors for the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) and ignition switch. See Figure.
- Install the fixed shroud. See Figure. Install the screws fastening the fixed shroud in place and tighten the screws to 3 N.m (23 in. lbs.) torque.
- If equipped with traction control, position the upper shroud above the column and route the switch wiring down around the column. Connect the wiring connector from the column wiring harness to the traction control switch wiring (attached to upper shroud). See Figure.
- Position the lower shroud on the column. See Figure. Install the lower shroud mounting screw. Tighten the screw to 2 N.m (17 in. lbs.) torque.
- If equipped with adjustable pedals, Connect the wiring connector for the switch to the column wiring harness. See Figure.
- Position the upper shroud on top of the lower shroud and snap it into place. Install the upper shroud mounting screws. See Figure. Tighten the screws to 2 N.m (17 in. lbs.) torque.
- Inspect shroud mating surfaces for excessive gaps and correct as necessary.
- Install the cluster trim bezel (Refer to BODY/INSTRUMENT PANEL/CLUSTER BEZEL - INSTALLATION) .
- Install the knee blocker/steering column cover plate. (Refer to BODY/INSTRUMENT PANEL/KNEE BLOCKER - INSTALLATION)
- Install the parking brake handle link.
- Install the knee blocker/steering column opening cover. (Refer to BODY/INSTRUMENT PANEL/STEERING COLUMN OPENING COVER - INSTALLATION)
- Align the splines and install the steering wheel on the steering column shaft (Refer to STEERING/COLUMN/STEERING WHEEL - INSTALLATION) .
- Install the damper over the steering column shaft. See Figure.
- Install the steering wheel retaining bolt. See Figure. Tighten the bolt to 61 N.m (45 ft. lbs.) torque.
- If the steering wheel is equipped with remote audio controls, connect the wiring connector to the clockspring. See Figure.
- Connect the two squib connectors to the driver airbag. See Figure. The connectors are color coded to avoid connector mix-up.
- Connect the speed control and horn connector to the clockspring. See Figure.
- Install the airbag to the steering wheel. Install the driver airbag mounting screws. See Figure. Tighten screws to 10 N.m (90 in. lbs.) torque.
- Connect the battery negative (ground) cable to battery post following special Diagnosis And Testing procedure. (Refer to ELECTRICAL/RESTRAINTS - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING)
- Check operation of all steering column mounted components.
- Road test vehicle to ensure proper operation of steering.
