A/C Clutch Relay

NOTE: For circuit identification and wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS . If Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is replaced, PCM must be reprogrammed. See PROGRAMMING in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - NEON, SRT-4 & SX (CANADIAN) article. After each repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Perform appropriate POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST 2 to ensure system is functioning properly. See the following:

Possible Causes

Testing

  1. Ensure that the refrigerant system is properly charged. Turn the ignition on. With the DRBIII® scan tool, actuate the A/C clutch relay. Is the A/C clutch actuating? If yes, the A/C clutch system operating properly at this time. If no, go to next step.
  2. Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the A/C clutch harness connector. Measure the (Z1) ground circuit in the A/C clutch harness connector to ground. Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the (Z1) ground circuit for an open.
  3. Disconnect the A/C clutch harness connector. Turn the ignition on. With the DRBIII® scan tool, actuate the A/C clutch relay. Measure the voltage of the A/C clutch relay output circuit in the (C3) A/C clutch harness connector. Is the voltage above 11.0 volts? If yes, replace the A/C clutch. If no, go to next step.
  4. Turn the ignition off. Remove the A/C clutch relay from the PDC. See Fig 1 for 2.0L or Fig 2 for 2.4L. On all models, PDC is located in engine compartment. See Fig 3 for 2.0L or Fig 4 for 2.4L. Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, probe the (A17) fused B+ circuit in the PDC. Does the test light illuminate brightly? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the (A17) fused B+ circuit. Inspect fuses and replace as necessary.
  5. Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the A/C clutch relay from the PDC. Disconnect the A/C clutch harness connector. Measure the resistance of the (C3) A/C clutch relay output circuit between the PDC and the A/C clutch harness connector. Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms? If yes, replace the A/C clutch relay. If no, repair the (C3) A/C clutch relay output circuit for an open.
