DTC P0135: 1/1 O2 Sensor Heater Failure, DTC P0141: 1/2 O2 Sensor Heater Failure, DTC P0155: 2/1 O2 Sensor Heater Failure & DTC P0161: 2/2: O2 Sensor Heater Failure: Testing

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Dodge Dakota. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Turn the ignition off. Wait a minimum of 8 minutes for O2 sensor to cool down before continuing test.
  1. Turn the ignition on, with the engine off. With the DRBIII®, actuate the O2 Heater Test. With the DRBIII®, monitor O2 sensor voltage for at least 2 minutes. Does the voltage stabilize at 0.4-0.6 volt during the Heater Test? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  3.
  2. WARNING: When the engine is operating, DO NOT stand in a direct line with the fan. DO NOT put your hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. DO NOT wear loose clothing.
  3. Conditions that set DTC are not present at this time. The following list may help in identifying the intermittent condition:
    • With the engine running at normal operating temperature, monitor the DRBIII® parameters related to the DTC while wiggling the wiring harness. Look for parameter values to change and/or a DTC to set.
    • Review the DRBIII® Freeze Frame information. Attempt to duplicate condition that caused DTC to set.
    • Refer to any Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) that may apply.
    • Visually inspect the related wiring harness. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires.
    • Visually inspect the related wiring harness connectors. Look for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded terminals.

Were any of the above conditions present? If yes, repair as necessary. If no, test is complete.

  4. NOTE: Turn the ignition off. Allow the O2 sensor to cool to room temperature.
  5. Disconnect the O2 sensor harness connector. Measure the resistance across the O2 sensor heater element (component side). Is resistance within specified value? See O2 SENSOR HEATER RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS  table. If yes, go to next step. If no, replace O2 sensor.
    O2 SENSOR HEATER RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS

    Application (1) Ohms
    2.5L 4.0-5.0
    3.9L & 5.9L
    1/1 & 2/1 3.3-4.1
    1/2 & 2/2 4.0-5.0
    4.7L 12.1-14.8
    (1) At 70°F (21.1°C). The resistance value increases with increased temperature.
  6. NOTE: The O2 heater supply circuit may be a fused Automatic Shutdown (ASD) relay output circuit or O2 sensor heater relay output circuit, depending on the O2 sensor being tested. See appropriate illustration under CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION .
  7. Turn the ignition on, with the engine off. With the DRBIII®, actuate the O2 Heater Test. Measure the voltage on the fused ASD relay/O2 heater relay output circuit at the O2 sensor harness connector. Is the voltage more than 10.0 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the open in the fused ASD relay/O2 heater relay output circuit.
  8. NOTE: There may be 2 types of O2 heater ground circuits used on this vehicle. Verify which type of O2 heater ground circuit is being tested, Power Width Modulated (PWM) circuit or the O2 heater relay ground circuit. See appropriate illustration under CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION .
  9. Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the PCM harness connectors. If testing a PWM heated O2 sensor, measure the resistance of the PWM circuit between the O2 sensor harness connector and the PCM harness connector. If testing a heated O2 sensor that uses an O2 heater relay to supply power to the O2 heater, measure the resistance between ground and the heater ground terminal of the O2 sensor harness connector. Is the resistance more than 5.0 ohms? If yes, repair the open in either the O2 sensor heater ground circuit or the PWM circuit. If no, go to next step.
  10. NOTE: Before beginning this test, verify type of heated O2 sensor being tested, PWM heated O2 sensor or the heater relay controlled heated O2 sensor. See appropriate illustration under CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION .
  11. Remove the O2 heater relay if it applies to the type of heated O2 sensor being tested. Measure the resistance between ground and the PWM circuit if it applies to the heated O2 sensor being tested or measure the resistance between ground and the O2 heater relay control circuit if it applies to the heated O2 sensor being tested. Is the resistance less than 100 ohms? If yes, repair the short to ground in the PWM/O2 heater relay control circuit. If no, go to next step.
  12. There are no possible causes remaining, replace the PCM.
