DTC P0517: Battery Temperature Sensor High: Testing
- Turn the ignition on, with the engine off. With the DRBIII(R), read DTCs and record the related Freeze Frame data, and read the Batt Temp Sensor voltage. Is the voltage less than 0.5 volt? If yes, go to next step. If no, see INTERMITTENT FAILURES under ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS.
- Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the BTS harness connector. Start the engine. Allow the engine to idle. Measure the voltage on the BTS Signal circuit in the BTS harness connector. Is the voltage more than 5.3 volts? If yes, repair the short to battery voltage in the BTS Signal circuit. If no, go to next step.
- Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the PCM harness connectors. Measure the resistance of the BTS Signal circuit from the BTS harness connector to the appropriate terminal in the Miller Special Tool. Is the resistance less than 5.0 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the open in the BTS Signal circuit.
- Measure the resistance of the Sensor Ground circuit from the BTS harness connector to the appropriate terminal in the Miller Special Tool. Is the resistance less than 5.0 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the open in the Sensor Ground circuit.
- Turn the ignition off. Reconnect the PCM harness connectors. Turn the ignition on, with the engine off. With the DRBIII(R) in Sensors, read the Batt Temp Sensor voltage value. Connect a jumper wire between the BTS Signal circuit and the Sensor Ground circuit in the BTS harness connector. Did the Batt Temp Sensor voltage change from more than 4.5 volts to less than one volt? If yes, replace the BTS. If no, go to next step.
- There are no possible causes remaining, replace the PCM.
WARNING:
When the engine is operating, DO NOT stand in a direct line with the fan. DO NOT put your hands near the pulleys, belts or fan. DO NOT wear loose clothing.
CAUTION:
DO NOT probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal-to-pin connection. Install Miller Special Tool (8815) to perform diagnosis.
CAUTION:
DO NOT probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal-to-pin connection. Install Miller Special Tool (8815) to perform diagnosis.
NOTE:
Before continuing, check the PCM harness connector terminals for corrosion, damage, or terminal push-out. Repair as necessary.
