DTC P0116: Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Performance: Testing

  1. Turn the ignition on, with the engine off. With the DRBIII(R), read DTCs and record the related Freeze Frame data. Is the Good Trip counter displayed and equal to zero? If yes, go to next step. If no, see INTERMITTENT FAILURES  under ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS.
  2. NOTE: Visually inspect both the component and the PCM harness connectors. Look for damage, partially broken wires and backed-out or corroded terminals.
  3. Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the ECT Sensor harness connector. Turn the ignition on, with the engine off. Measure the voltage on the ECT Signal circuit in the ECT Sensor harness connector. Is the voltage more than 5.2 volts? If yes, repair the short to battery voltage in the ECT Signal circuit. If no, go to next step.
  4. With the DRBIII(R), read the ECT Sensor voltage. Is the voltage more than 4.6 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  7 .
  5. Turn the ignition off. Connect a jumper wire across the ECT Signal circuit and the Sensor Ground circuit in the ECT Sensor harness connector. Turn the ignition on, with the engine off. With the DRBIII(R), read the ECT Sensor voltage. Is the voltage less than one volt? If yes, replace the ECT Sensor. If no, go to next step.
  6. CAUTION: DO NOT probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal-to-pin connection. Use Miller Special Tool (8815) when performing diagnosis at PCM harness connectors.
  7. Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the PCM harness connectors. Measure the resistance of the ECT Signal circuit from the ECT Sensor harness connector to the appropriate terminal of the Miller Special Tool. Is the resistance less than 5.0 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the open in the ECT Signal circuit.
  8. CAUTION: DO NOT probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal-to-pin connection. Use Miller Special Tool (8815) when performing diagnosis at PCM harness connectors.
  9. Measure the resistance of the Sensor Ground circuit from the ECT Sensor harness connector to the appropriate terminal of the Miller Special Tool. Is the resistance less than 5.0 ohms? If yes, check the PCM harness connector terminals for corrosion, damage, or terminal push-out. Repair as necessary. If terminals are okay, replace the PCM. If no, repair the open in the Sensor Ground circuit.
  10. Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the PCM harness connectors. Measure the resistance between ground and the ECT Signal circuit in the ECT Sensor harness connector. Is the resistance less than 100 ohms? If yes, repair the short to ground in the ECT Signal circuit. If no, go to next step.
  11. Measure the resistance between the ECT Signal circuit and the Sensor Ground circuit in the ECT Sensor harness connector. Is the resistance less than 100 ohms? If yes, repair the short between the Sensor Ground circuit and the ECT Signal circuit. If no, check the PCM harness connector terminals for corrosion, damage, or terminal push-out. Repair as necessary. If terminals are okay, replace the PCM.
