Fuel System Pressure Release

WARNING: Fuel system is under high pressure. Always release fuel pressure before attempting to open system for testing or component replacement. Do not allow fuel to flow onto engine or electrical parts while testing fuel system components.
NOTE: For component location, see COMPONENT LOCATIONS  . For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . For circuit identification and wiring diagram, see appropriate WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  1. Remove fuel tank cap. Remove fuel pump relay from power distribution center at driver's side front corner of engine compartment, near battery. See Figure . Start the engine. Allow the engine to idle until engine stalls. Attempt to start the engine until it will no longer run. Turn ignition off.
  2. CAUTION: Ensure step  1 is performed to release high-fuel pressure in the fuel rail before proceeding. DO NOT attempt to use the following steps to release fuel pressure unless step  1 has been performed, as excessive fuel will be released into the cylinder.
  3. Disconnect electrical connector at any fuel injector. Connect a jumper wire between positive battery terminal and ASD Relay Output circuit at fuel injector.
  4. Momentarily connect jumper wire between remaining electrical terminal on fuel injector and negative battery terminal for a few seconds. DO NOT apply voltage to fuel injector for extended time or fuel injector may be damaged. This operates fuel injector and releases fuel pressure.
  5. Remove jumper wires. Install electrical connector on fuel injector. Fuel pressure should now be released. Reinstall fuel pump relay. Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) may have been stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) due to the removal of fuel pump relay. For clearing DTCs from PCM, see CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
