One Gauge Not Operating Properly

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Dodge Dakota. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Possible Causes:

CAUTION: Always turn ignition off before disconnecting or connecting any control module connector. Failure to do so could result in damage to control module.
NOTE: Ensure vehicle being tested has a fully charged battery. If it does not, false symptoms may occur.
NOTE: For component location, see appropriate illustration under COMPONENT LOCATIONS  . For terminal identification, see appropriate illustration under CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . For circuit and wire color identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  . For component removal and installation procedures, see appropriate component under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  .
NOTE: Before proceeding with this test, diagnose and repair any communication or PCM DTCs first. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  and/or SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - DAKOTA article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Ensure Instrument Cluster is able to communicate on the PCI Bus.

Testing:

  1. Turn ignition off. Connect DRBIII(R) to DLC. Turn ignition on. Using the DRBIII(R), select BODY, MIC, SYSTEM TESTS, then CLUSTER CALIBRATION POINTS. Using the DRBIII(R), select inoperative gauge and actuate Gauge Calibration Points. Gauges should reach specified calibration points. See GAUGE CALIBRATION POINTS  table. Does inoperative gauge respond correctly to the Calibration Points? If yes, go to next step. If no, replace the Instrument Cluster. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  2. The condition is not present at this time. The following list may help in identifying the intermittent condition:
    • Refer to any Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) that may apply.
    • Visually inspect related wiring harnesses for any chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires.
    • Visually inspect related harness connectors for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.

Were any of the above conditions present? If yes, repair as necessary. Perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS. If no, test is complete.
