Checking Basic Idle Speed
- Idle speed should not be adjusted until spark plugs, injectors, idle air control motor and compression are checked and are normal. Start vehicle and bring to operating temperature. Ensure transmission is in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T) and all accessories are off.
- Turn engine off and connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Start engine and let idle. Select scan tool item No. 30 of actuator test. Use scan tool to hold IAC motor at basic step to adjust idle speed. Idle speed indicated on scan tool should be 650-750 RPM.
- If idle speed is slightly lower, check for deposits on throttle plate and clean as necessary. If idle speed is significantly different, adjust idle speed using Speed Adjusting Screw (SAS) located on left side of throttle body.
- After adjustment is made, press CLEAR key on scan tool to release IAC motor from actuator test mode. If IAC motor is not released manually, actuator test mode will continue for 27 minutes.
- Turn engine off and disconnect scan tool. Start engine and let idle for 10 minutes. Recheck that engine idle speed is within specification.
