Instrument Cluster Dimming Fault
- This test assumes that all exterior lighting controlled by headlight switch is functioning properly. If exterior lighting is not functioning properly, correct fault(s) before continuing with this test. See EXTERIOR LIGHTING . If all exterior lighting controlled by headlight switch is functioning properly and one or more instrument cluster illumination lights are inoperative or a dimming problem exists, go to next step.
- If diagnosing an individual inoperative instrument cluster illumination light, check and replace illumination bulb and/or bulb holder as necessary and retest. If diagnosing a lack of dimming control for odometer/trip odometer or gear selector indicator Vacuum Fluorescent Displays (VFDs), but all other instrument cluster illumination lights can be dimmed, repair day brightness circuit between headlight switch and instrument cluster. See HEADLIGHT SYSTEMS article. If diagnosing a complete lack of dimming control, go to next step.
- Check fuse No. 9 (5-amp) located in instrument panel junction block. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . If fuse No. 9 is okay, go to next step. If fuse No. 9 is blown, check for short to ground in Orange wire between Blue 16-pin instrument panel junction block connector C9 terminal No. 5 and Gray 10-pin instrument cluster connector C2 terminal No. 1. See Figure and Figure . See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Repair as necessary.
- Using headlight switch, turn parking lights on. Rotate dimmer wheel upward to just before interior lights detent. Connect DVOM between ground and fuse No. 9 in instrument panel junction block. While observing DVOM, rotate dimmer wheel downward. Voltage reading should change from battery voltage to zero volts. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, locate and repair open circuit between headlight switch and instrument panel junction block. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
- Turn parking lights off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove fuse No. 9 from instrument panel junction block. Using DVOM, check continuity between ground and Gray 10-pin instrument cluster connector C2 terminal No. 1 (Orange wire). See Figure . If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, locate and repair short to ground in Orange wire.
- Install fuse No. 9 in instrument panel junction block. Connect negative battery cable. Using headlight switch, turn parking lights on. Rotate thumbwheel upward to just before interior lights detent. Using DVOM, check for battery voltage at Gray 10-pin instrument cluster connector C2 terminal No. 1 (Orange wire). If battery voltage does not exist, locate and repair open circuit between fuse No. 9 in instrument panel junction block and instrument cluster connector C2 terminal No. 1. If battery voltage exists, replace instrument cluster illumination bulb(s) and bulb holder(s).
