DTC P1294: Target Idle Not Reached: Testing

  1. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, read DTCs. If GOOD TRIP counter is displayed for DTC P1294 and displayed count is "0", go to next step. If GOOD TRIP counter is not displayed for DTC P1294 or displayed count is not "0", test is complete.
  2. With engine off, check throttle linkage and throttle plate in throttle body for binding condition. With throttle linkage at idle position, ensure throttle plate is fully closed. If no binding condition exists and throttle plate fully closes, go to next step. If binding condition exists or throttle plate does not fully close, repair as necessary.
  3. Check engine vacuum hoses, brake booster, intake manifold and components for vacuum leaks. Ensure proper PCV valve is installed and PCV system is free of leaks. On 4.7L, PCV valve is located on oil filler tube. On 5.9L, PCV valve is located on top of valve cover. On all models, if vacuum leaks exist, incorrect PCV valve is used or PCV system is leaking, repair as necessary. If no vacuum leaks exist, correct PCV valve is used and PCV valve is free of leaks, go to next step.
  4. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect vacuum line from PCV valve. Install Air Metering Orifice (6714) into disconnected PCV valve vacuum line. Disconnect purge hose from throttle body and plug throttle body fitting located near Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor. Start engine, allow it to idle and reach operating temperature of more than 180°F (82°C). Ensure all accessories are off. Using scan tool in SYSTEMS MODE, perform MINIMUM AIR FLOW test. If engine speed is not 500-900 RPM, go to next step. If engine speed is 500-900 RPM, check PCV valve for proper operation. See POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - DURANGO article. If PCV valve operates properly, no problem is indicated at this time. Test is complete.
  5. WARNING: Always clean throttle body in a well ventilated area. Wear appropriate gloves and DO NOT allow cleaner to come in contact with eyes or skin. Wash thoroughly after using cleaner.
  6. Ensure ignition is off. Remove throttle body. While holding throttle open, spray entire throttle body bore with appropriate cleaner. Ensure Idle Air Control (IAC) motor passage is also cleaned. Using compressed air, dry throttle body. Install throttle body. Ensure air metering orifice is still installed in PCV valve vacuum hose and throttle body fitting is plugged. Start engine, allow it to idle and reach operating temperature of more than 180°F (82°C). Ensure all accessories are off. Using scan tool in SYSTEMS MODE, perform MINIMUM AIR FLOW test. If engine speed is not 500-900 RPM, replace throttle body. If engine speed is 500-900 RPM, no problem is indicated at this time. Test is complete.
