Retrieving Diagnostic Trouble Codes

NOTE: If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is illuminated and NO BUS is displayed in odometer display on instrument cluster, repair communication problem between instrument cluster and powertrain control module. See BODY CONTROL MODULES - BREEZE, CIRRUS, SEBRING CONVERTIBLE & STRATUS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
NOTE: Ensure battery is fully charged before retrieving diagnostic trouble codes.
  1. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below driver's side of instrument panel, near driver's side kick panel. See Fig 1 . Turn ignition on. If scan tool will not power up, go to next step. If scan tool powers up, go to step  5 .
  2. Check for loose cable connections or bad cable. If cable connections or cable are defective, repair or replace components as necessary, and recheck for DTCs, then go to step  5 . If cable connections and cable are okay, go to next step.
  3. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 16 (Pink wire) at DLC. See Fig 2 . If voltage is 11 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage if less than 11 volts, repair open or short in power distribution circuit to DLC as necessary. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  4. Measure resistance between ground and terminals No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 5 (Black/Violet wire) at DLC. If both resistances are less than 5 ohms, repair scan tool as necessary, then go to next step. If either resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in appropriate wire. Black wire runs from DLC to terminal No. 15 at junction box connector C5, then from terminal No. 3 at junction block connector C9 to ground. Ground point is located at behind driver's side kick panel, next to door jam. Black/Violet wire runs between DLC and terminal No. 4 at Body Control Module (BCM) connector C3. BCM is located behind left side of instrument panel, attached to fuse junction block.
  5. If scan tool displays an error message, (i.e., USER-REQUESTED COLD BOOT or USER-REQUESTED WARM BOOT), follow scan tool manufacturer's instructions. If scan tool does not display an error message, go to next step.
  6. If scan tool displays NO RESPONSE, perform TEST NS-1: NO RESPONSE CONDITION  . If scan tool does not display NO RESPONSE, go to next step.
  7. If scan tool does not display a bus failure, go to next step. If scan tool displays a bus failure, repair bus circuit as necessary. See BODY CONTROL MODULES - BREEZE, CIRRUS, SEBRING CONVERTIBLE & STRATUS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  8. Using scan tool manufacturer's instructions, read and record Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) message (DRB scan tool) or DTC (generic scan tool) and freeze frame data. If no DTCs exist, go to next step. If any DTCs exist, perform appropriate test procedure under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS  . For a complete list of Powertrain Control Module (PCM) DTCs, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . Once all repairs are made, ensure DTCs are cleared from PCM. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  .
  9. For any other problems, refer to one of the following:
    • For driveability problems, perform TEST NTC-1: NO TROUBLE CODE TEST MENU  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.
    • For no-start problems, perform TEST NS-SEL: NO START TEST SELECTION  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.
    • For speed control problems and additional servicing information, see appropriate CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
    • For charging system problems and additional servicing information, see appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
    • If MIL remains on steady and no DTCs exist, check instrument cluster for diagnosis of MIL. See BODY CONTROL MODULES - BREEZE, CIRRUS, SEBRING CONVERTIBLE & STRATUS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
