Test NTC-18: Checking Brake Switch Sense
NOTE:
Possible causes are: ground circuit open, Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector failure, defective brakelight switch, brakelight switch sense circuit open, brakelight switch sense circuit shorted to ground or defective PCM.
NOTE:
After making any repair during this testing procedure, perform TEST VER-4A: SPEED CONTROL VERIFICATION
.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect brakelight switch harness connector. Inspect harness connector and clean/repair as necessary. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at terminal No. 1 (White/Red wire) at brakelight switch harness connector. See Figure . If voltage is 10 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to step 4 .
- Using a jumper wire, connect terminals No. 1 (White/Red wire) and No. 2 (Black/Light Green wire) at brakelight switch harness connector. See Figure . Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, observe brakelight switch input status. If scan tool displays RELEASED, go to next step. If scan tool does not display RELEASED, repair open Black/Light Green wire between brakelight switch and body control module.
- If no other potential causes are remaining, replace brakelight switch.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connectors. PCM is located to left of Power Distribution Center (PDC) in engine compartment, next to air cleaner. Inspect harness connectors and clean/repair as necessary. Inspect PCM harness connector for corroded, damaged, pushed out or miswired terminals. If connector is okay, go to next step. If connector is not okay, repair as necessary.
- Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 62 (White/Red wire) at PCM harness connector C2. See Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in White/Red wire between brakelight switch and PCM.
- Measure resistance in White/Red wire between terminal No. 1 at brakelight switch harness connector and terminal No. 62 at PCM harness connector C2. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in White/Red wire between brakelight switch and PCM.
- If no other potential causes are remaining, replace PCM. After replacing PCM, PCM MUST be reprogrammed. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING.
