DTC P0551: Power Steering Switch Failure: Testing

  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect power steering pressure switch 2-pin harness connector. Power steering pressure switch is located on power steering rack. Inspect harness connector and clean/repair as necessary. Turn ignition on. Connect one end of a jumper wire to terminal No. 1 (Dark Blue/Light Green wire) at power steering pressure switch harness connector. Using scan tool, observe power steering pressure switch state. Repeatedly touch other end of jumper wire to ground. If power steering pressure switch state changed from HIGH to LOW, go to next step. If power steering pressure switch state does not change from HIGH to LOW, go to step  4 .
  2. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 2 (Black wire) at power steering pressure switch harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire between power steering pressure switch and Body Control Module (BCM). BCM is located behind left side of instrument panel, attached to fuse junction block.
  3. If no other potential causes are remaining, replace power steering pressure switch.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connectors. PCM is located to left of Power Distribution Center (PDC) in engine compartment, next to air cleaner. Inspect harness connector and clean/repair as necessary. Measure resistance in Dark Blue/Light Green wire between terminal No. 1 at power steering pressure switch harness connector and terminal No. 45 at PCM harness connector C2. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Dark Blue/Light Green wire between power steering pressure switch and PCM.
  5. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 45 (Dark Blue/Light Green wire) at PCM harness connector C2. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Dark Blue/Light Green wire between power steering pressure switch and PCM.
  6. If no other potential causes are remaining, replace PCM. After replacing PCM, PCM MUST be reprogrammed. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING.
