DTC P0118: ECT Sensor Volt Too High: Testing

  1. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, observe Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor voltage. If voltage is 4.5 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than 4.5 volts, go to step  7 .
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECT sensor harness connector. See Figure -Figure . Inspect harness connector and clean/repair as necessary. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connectors. PCM is located to left of Power Distribution Center (PDC) in engine compartment, next to air cleaner. Inspect harness connector and clean/repair as necessary. Measure resistance in Black/Light Blue wire between ECT sensor harness connector and terminal No. 43 at PCM harness connector C2. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/Light Blue wire between ECT sensor and PCM.
  3. Connect PCM harness connectors. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 2 (Black/Red wire) at ECT sensor harness connector. If voltage is less than 6 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 6 volts or more, repair short to voltage in Black/Red wire between ECT sensor and PCM.
  4. Using a jumper wire, connect Black/Red wire terminal and Black/Light Blue wire terminal at ECT harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, observe ECT sensor voltage. If voltage is one volt or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than one volt, replace ECT sensor.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connectors. Measure resistance in Black/Red wire between ECT sensor harness connector and terminal No. 26 at PCM harness connector C1. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/Red wire between ECT sensor and PCM.
  6. If no other potential causes are remaining, replace PCM. After replacing PCM, PCM MUST be reprogrammed. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING.
  7. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, observe ECT sensor voltage. Wiggle wiring harness between ECT sensor and Powertrain Control Module (PCM). PCM is located to left of Power Distribution Center (PDC) in engine compartment, next to air cleaner. If voltage changes, repair wiring harness where wiggling caused voltage to change. If voltage does not change, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition off. Inspect harness connectors and wiring. If no problems exist, test is complete. If any problems exist, repair as necessary.
