DTC P0125: Closed Loop Temp Not Reached

NOTE: For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
NOTE: Closed loop operation is monitored after engine has been running for 10 minutes and battery voltage is more than 10.4 volts. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) if engine temperature does not increase more than 18°F (-7.8°C) in 10 minutes after engine is started for 2 consecutive trips. Possible causes are: extremely cold outside temperatures, improper coolant level, defective thermostat, defective Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, or defective connectors or wiring.
  1. The best way to diagnose this DTC is to allow the vehicle to sit overnight so that engine is cold. Check that coolant is at proper level. If proper coolant level exists, go to next step. If proper coolant level does not exist, adjust coolant level as needed. Perform TEST VER-2  .
  2. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool in SENSORS mode, read ENG COOLANT TMP DEG. This is the engine coolant temperature value for ECT sensor. If engine coolant temperature is more than 180°F (82°C), allow engine to cool until engine coolant temperature is 150°F (66°C).
  3. Place thermometer in radiator so that the actual engine coolant temperature may be monitored. Start engine and allow engine to idle. Using scan tool in SENSORS mode, read ENG COOLANT TMP DEG again while warming engine to normal operating temperature. Also, monitor engine coolant temperature on thermometer while warming engine to normal operating temperature. Both temperature readings should increase in a smooth transition as engine coolant temperature increases. As engine warms to normal operating temperature, the reading on thermometer should be very close to reading obtained on scan tool. Check that thermostat opens at proper temperature. If thermostat opens at proper temperature, go to next step. If thermostat does not open at proper temperature, replace thermostat. Perform TEST VER-2  .
  4. Check that ENG COOLANT TMP DEG reading on scan tool increases in a smooth transition to at least 180°F (82°C). If ENG COOLANT TMP DEG reading on scan tool increases in a smooth transition to at least 180°F (82°C), test is complete. If ENG COOLANT TMP DEG reading on scan tool does not increase in a smooth transition to at least 180°F (82°C), check for high resistance on ECT sensor wiring between ECT sensor and PCM. On 4.7L, ECT sensor is located near front of intake manifold and contains Black/Light Blue wire and Tan/Black wire in the connector. On 5.2L and 5.9L, ECT sensor is located near thermostat housing on intake manifold and contains Black/Light Blue wire and Tan/Black wire in the connector. On all models, PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. If high resistance exist, repair wiring as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2  . If wiring is okay, replace ECT sensor. Perform TEST VER-2  .
