Test NTC-4: Checking Evaporative Emission System
NOTE:
EVAP purge solenoid may also be referred to as EVAP solenoid or proportional purge solenoid.
- Inspect all vacuum hoses from the engine to EVAP purge solenoid, and from EVAP purge solenoid to EVAP canister and fuel tank for proper routing or restrictions. EVAP purge solenoid is located near passenger's side strut tower. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . EVAP canister is located on frame rail, directly below driver's seat. If vacuum hoses are okay and properly routed, go to next step. If vacuum hoses are defective or improperly routed, repair as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2A .
- Start engine and warm engine until engine coolant temperature is at least 170°F (76.7°C). Shut engine off. Disconnect vacuum hose at EVAP purge solenoid that goes to EVAP canister.
- Start engine. There should be no vacuum flow through EVAP purge solenoid for 1-2 minutes. If vacuum flow exists through EVAP purge solenoid within one minute, go to next step. If no vacuum flow exits through EVAP purge solenoid within one minute, go to step 7 .
- Shut engine off. Inspect vacuum hose and line from EVAP purge solenoid to EVAP canister for being disconnected or being cut open. If vacuum hose or line is not disconnected or cut open, go to next step. If vacuum hose or line is disconnected or cut open, replace vacuum hose or line as necessary. Replace EVAP purge solenoid. Perform TEST VER-2A .
- Remove EVAP purge solenoid. Lightly tap ports on EVAP purge solenoid against a solid surface. If foreign material comes out of EVAP purge solenoid, go to next step. If foreign material does not come out of EVAP purge solenoid, replace EVAP purge solenoid. Perform TEST VER-2A .
- Clean out vacuum hose and line from EVAP purge solenoid to EVAP canister. Replace EVAP purge solenoid and EVAP canister. Perform TEST VER-2A .
- Shut engine off. Ensure vacuum hose that goes from EVAP purge solenoid to EVAP canister is still disconnected at EVAP purge solenoid. Apply 5 psi (.35 kg/cm2 ) of air pressure on vacuum hose that goes from EVAP purge solenoid to the EVAP canister. DO NOT apply more than 5 psi (.35 kg/cm2 ) air pressure on vacuum hose. If air does not flow through vacuum hose and EVAP canister, go to next step. If air flows through vacuum hose and EVAP canister, EVAP purge solenoid and vacuum hoses are okay. Test is complete.
- Ensure vacuum hose that goes from EVAP purge solenoid to EVAP canister is still disconnected at EVAP purge solenoid. Start engine and warm engine until engine coolant temperature is at least 170°F (76.7°C). After 90 seconds, ensure vacuum flow cycles intermittently through EVAP purge solenoid. If vacuum flow cycles intermittently through EVAP purge solenoid after 90 seconds, go to next step. If no vacuum flow cycles intermittently through EVAP purge solenoid after 90 seconds, replace EVAP purge solenoid. Perform TEST VER-2A .
- Shut engine off. Disconnect vacuum hose at EVAP canister that goes to EVAP purge solenoid. Ensure vacuum hose that goes from EVAP purge solenoid to EVAP canister is still disconnected at EVAP purge solenoid. Apply light air pressure on vacuum hose that goes from EVAP purge solenoid to EVAP canister. DO NOT apply more than 5 psi (.35 kg/cm2 ) air pressure on vacuum hose. If air flows through vacuum hose, replace EVAP canister. Perform TEST VER-2A . If air does not flow through vacuum hose, repair or replace vacuum hose as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2A .
