NOTE:
For connector terminal ID, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION
. For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Attempt to start engine. If engine starts, go to next step. If engine does not start, go to step 11 .
- If ignition was on when NO RESPONSE was displayed on scan tool, go to next step. If ignition was not on when NO RESPONSE was displayed on scan tool, turn ignition on and recheck display on scan tool. If NO RESPONSE is still displayed on scan tool, go to next step.
- Ensure ignition is off. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminals No. 4 (Black/Light Green wire) and No. 5 (Black/White wire) on data link connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Black/Light Green wire or Black/White wire between data link connector and ground connection. Ground connection for Black/Light Green wire is located under instrument panel. Ground connection for Black/White wire is located near rear of cylinder head or cylinder block and becomes a Black wire. Perform TEST VER-1A .
- Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. PCM is located between driver's side front fender and power distribution center, near battery. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between cavity No. 6 (Light Green wire) on data link connector and terminal No. 75 (Light Green wire) on Gray PCM connector C2. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Light Green wire between PCM and data link connector. Perform TEST VER-1A .
- Ensure PCM connectors are still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and between cavity No. 6 (Light Green wire) on data link connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground on Light Green wire between PCM and data link connector. Perform TEST VER-1A .
- Ensure correct Pink wire is used when performing this step, as 2 Pink wires are used in data link connector. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between cavity No. 7 (Pink wire) on data link connector and terminal No. 65 (Pink wire) on Gray PCM connector C2. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Pink wire between PCM and data link connector. Perform TEST VER-1A .
- Ensure PCM connectors are still disconnected. Ensure correct Pink wire is used when performing this step, as 2 Pink wires are used in data link connector. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and cavity No. 7 (Pink wire) on data link connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground on Pink wire between PCM and data link connector. Perform TEST VER-1A .
- Ensure PCM connectors are still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between cavities No. 6 (Light Green wire) and No. 7 (Pink wire) on data link connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Light Green wire and Pink wire between data link connector and PCM as they are shorted together. Perform TEST VER-1A .
- Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to functional data link connector on another vehicle. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If NO RESPONSE is displayed on scan tool, go to next step. If NO RESPONSE is not displayed on scan tool, replace PCM on original vehicle. Perform TEST VER-1A .
- Turn ignition off. Substitute another scan tool cable. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If NO RESPONSE is displayed on scan tool, it is assumed that scan tool is defective. Repair or replace scan tool. Perform TEST VER-1A . If NO RESPONSE is not displayed on scan tool, replace original scan tool cable. Perform TEST VER-1A .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Throttle Position (TP) sensor connector. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using voltmeter, check voltage at terminal No. 3 (Violet/White wire) on TP sensor connector. If voltage is 6 volts or less, go to next step. If voltage is more than 6 volts, repair open on Black/Tan wires between ground connection and terminals No. 10 on Black PCM connector C1 and terminal No. 50 on Gray PCM connector C2. PCM is located between driver's side front fender and power distribution center, near battery. Perform TEST VER-1A . Ground connection for Black/Light Green wire is located under instrument panel. Ground connection for Black/White wire is located near rear of cylinder head or cylinder block and becomes a Black wire.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located between driver's side front fender and power distribution center, near battery.
- Turn ignition on with engine off. Using voltmeter, check voltage at terminal No. 20 (White/Black wire) on Black PCM connector C1. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open on White/Black wire to PCM. White/Black wire is the fused ignition switch output and goes from PCM to power distribution center, and then to Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) No. 1. PTC No. 1 is a specified amperage solid-state circuit breaker which receives voltage when ignition is on and may be reset when all current is removed from PTC for approximately 20 seconds. PTC No. 1 is located in junction block behind driver's side of instrument panel, to left of steering column. Perform TEST VER-1A .
- Ensure PCM connectors are disconnected and ignition is on. Using voltmeter, check voltage at terminal No. 46 (Red/White wire) on Gray PCM connector C2. If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to next step. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-1A .
- Turn ignition off. Remove fuse No. 5 (20-amp) from power distribution center. See Fig 1 . Power distribution center is located at driver's side front corner of engine compartment, near battery. Check condition of fuse No. 5. If fuse No. 5 is okay, go to next step. If fuse No. 5 is defective, go to step 17 .
- Turn ignition on with engine off. Using voltmeter, check for voltage at both cavities for fuse No. 5 in power distribution center. Voltage should exist at one of the cavities, as this is the voltage supply cavity for fuse No. 5. If voltage at voltage supply cavity is more than 10 volts, repair open on Red/White wire between fuse No. 5 and terminal No. 46 (Red/White wire) on Gray PCM connector C2. Perform TEST VER-1A . If voltage at voltage supply cavity is 10 volts or less, repair open between fuse No. 5 and the battery. Perform TEST VER-1A .
- Turn ignition off. Remove fuel pump relay from power distribution center. See Fig 1 . Power distribution center is located at driver's side front corner of engine compartment, near battery. Disconnect fuel tank module connector. Fuel tank module contains fuel pump along with fuel level sending and is located on top of fuel tank.
- Ensure fuel pump relay is removed. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 4 (Dark Green/White wire) on fuel tank module connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, it is assumed that fuel pump is defective. Replace fuel pump and fuse No. 5. Fuse No. 5 is located in power distribution center at driver's side front corner of engine compartment. Perform TEST VER-1A . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground on Dark Green/White wire between fuel pump relay and fuel tank module. Perform TEST VER-1A .
