DTC P1486: EVAP Leak Monitor Pinched Hose Found
NOTE:
EVAP leak monitor is monitored immediately after a cold start with ambient temperature of 40-90°F (4.4-32.0°C) and engine coolant temperature is within 10°F (-12°C) of ambient temperature. EVAP purge flow is monitored with engine coolant temperature is more than 170°F (76.7°C), engine is in closed loop and has been idling for 2 minutes, no low fuel level condition exists, Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor vacuum is 15.7 in. Hg and altitude is less than 8000 feet. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) if no air flow through EVAP system is detected by EVAP leak monitor. Possible causes are: restricted fuel tank-to-EVAP canister vacuum hose, restricted leak detection pump or hose (if equipped), EVAP purge solenoid-to-EVAP canister vacuum hose restricted or restricted EVAP canister.
NOTE:
EVAP purge solenoid may also be referred to as EVAP solenoid or proportional purge solenoid.
- Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If GLOBAL GOOD TRIP counter is not displayed and equal to zero, go to next step. If GLOBAL GOOD TRIP counter is displayed and equal to zero, go to step 3 .
- At this time, conditions for EVAP leak monitor pinched hose found does not exist or is an intermittent problem. Using scan tool, read FREEZE FRAME data while attempting to duplicate the condition that caused DTC to be set. If DTC P1486: EVAP LEAK MONITOR PINCHED HOSE FOUND now exists, go to next step. If DTC P1486: EVAP LEAK MONITOR PINCHED HOSE FOUND does not exist, condition no longer exists. Perform TEST VER-6A .
- Millers Evaporative System Testing Kit (6872A) and Fuel Tank Cap Adapter (8382) are used to perform evaporative system pressure test. Perform pressure pump self-test on evaporative system testing kit by using instructions on cover of evaporative system testing kit.
- Remove fuel tank cap. Install fuel tank cap adapter on fuel tank cap and fuel tank. Connect hose from evaporative system testing kit to fuel tank cap adapter located between fuel tank and fuel tank cap.
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Start engine. Go to LDP SYSTEM TEST on scan tool and follow instructions on scan tool. Connect evaporative system testing kit to battery voltage. Set PRESSURE/HOLD valve on evaporative system testing kit to OPEN position and VENT valve to CLOSED position.
- Turn pump timer on and monitor gauge on evaporative system testing kit. When gauge reaches 14 in. H2 O of vacuum, disconnect vacuum hose connector from EVAP purge solenoid while monitoring gauge on evaporative system testing kit. EVAP purge solenoid is located near passenger's side strut tower. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . Go to next step.
- If pressure decreases when vacuum hose connector was disconnected from EVAP purge solenoid, go to next step. If pressure does not decrease when vacuum hose connector was disconnected from EVAP purge solenoid, go to step 11 .
- Start engine. With engine running and pump timer turned on, allow evaporative system testing kit to obtain 14 in. H2 O of vacuum again. Ensure PRESSURE/HOLD valve on evaporative system testing kit is in OPEN position and VENT valve is in CLOSED position. Note location of leak detection pump and pressure hose that goes from leak detection pump to EVAP canister. Leak detection pump is located below driver's side of steering gear, above engine cradle. See Fig 3 . EVAP canister is located on frame rail, directly below driver's seat. See Fig 4 .
- Disconnect pressure hose at leak detection pump while monitoring gauge on evaporative system testing kit. If pressure does not decrease when pressure hose was disconnected from leak detection pump, go to next step. If pressure decreases when pressure hose was disconnected from leak detection pump, replace leak detection pump. Perform TEST VER-6A .
- Inspect pressure hose between EVAP canister and leak detection pump. If pressure hose is okay and is not restricted, replace EVAP canister. Perform TEST VER-6A . If pressure hose is defective or restricted, replace pressure hose. Perform TEST VER-6A .
- Reconnect vacuum hose connector on EVAP purge solenoid. With engine running and pump timer turned on, allow evaporative system testing kit to obtain 14 in. H2 O of vacuum again. Ensure PRESSURE/HOLD valve on evaporative system testing kit is in OPEN position and VENT valve is in CLOSED position.
- Disconnect purge vacuum hose from EVAP canister while monitoring gauge on evaporative system testing kit. See Fig 4 . This is the vacuum hose that goes from EVAP canister to EVAP purge solenoid. EVAP canister is located on frame rail, directly below driver's seat. If pressure does not decrease when purge vacuum hose was disconnected from EVAP canister, go to next step. If pressure decreases when purge vacuum hose was disconnected from EVAP canister, repair restricted purge vacuum hose between EVAP canister and EVAP purge solenoid. Perform TEST VER-6A .
- With engine running and pump timer turned on, allow evaporative system testing kit to obtain 14 in. H2 O of vacuum again. Ensure PRESSURE/HOLD valve on evaporative system testing kit is in OPEN position and VENT valve is in CLOSED position. Disconnect hose at fuel tank vent port on EVAP canister while monitoring gauge on evaporative system testing kit. See Fig 4 . This is the hose that goes from EVAP canister to the fuel tank. If pressure does not decrease when hose at fuel tank vent port on EVAP canister was disconnected, repair restricted hose from EVAP canister to fuel tank. Perform TEST VER-6A . If pressure decreases when hose at fuel tank vent port on EVAP canister was disconnected, replace EVAP canister. Perform TEST VER-6A .
CAUTION:
When performing test procedures, keep lighted cigarettes, sparks, flames or other ignition sources away from test area. Ensure test area is well ventilated. Ensure fuel tank is at least 1/2 full and contains at least 3 gallons of fuel before performing following test procedures. Pressurizing fuel tank with less than 3 gallons of fuel may result in an explosion caused by ignition of the fumes. Wear safety glasses when performing test procedures.
