Test NTC-50: Readiness Test Aids
NOTE:
If all conditions that are required to run EVAP leak detection test are not met, EVAP leak detection test will not run and could lead to a misdiagnosis. If readiness test did not complete or vehicle did not meet all required conditions to run EVAP leak detection test, perform the following test. After test is completed, return to readiness test.
- If battery temperature value displayed on scan tool is too high, use a fan to blow cool air on Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to cool sensor that determines the battery temperature. Battery temperature sensor is integral to PCM. If battery temperature value displayed on scan tool is too low, blow warm air on PCM to warm sensor. DO NOT expose PCM to extreme temperatures or PCM may be damaged. PCM is located at left front corner of engine compartment, in front of Electronic Automatic Transmission Electronic Control Module (EATX-ECM), near relay box.
- If readiness test does not complete or if you want to quickly determine if a fault condition is still present, a quick check may be performed on EVAP system. Readiness test will not be completed because purge will not take place, but you will be able to see if PCM detects any problems that could cause the following DTCs to be set. Go to next step.
- DTC 184 (DRB Scan Tool), P1494 (Generic Scan Tool), DTC 31 (MIL)
- DTC 187 (DRB Scan Tool), P1486 (Generic Scan Tool), DTC 31 (MIL)
- DTC 160 (DRB Scan Tool), P0442 (Generic Scan Tool), DTC 31 (MIL)
- DTC 161 (DRB Scan Tool), P0455 (Generic Scan Tool), DTC 31 (MIL)
- Ensure LDP connector is connected. Using a voltmeter or test light connected to positive battery voltage, backprobe terminal No. 3 (Red/Yellow wire) at LDP harness connector. When PCM energizes LDP solenoid, a click noise should be heard at LDP and voltmeter or test light should indicate LDP is turned on. Compare leak detection pump solenoid operation with the monitor sequence. It may be necessary to refer to EVAP detection test sequence chart. As each section of EVAP leak detection test runs, this indicates that previous section passed successfully. By watching to see which tests complete, you can see if any conditions are present that the PCM considers abnormal.
- When performing quick check, if engine coolant temperature on scan tool is not within 10°F (5.6°C) of battery temperature reading, it may be necessary for vehicle to sit several hours to cool sufficiently, or you may substitute a resistor for Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor to bring the reading into the required range. This will also allow the technician to run the test repeatedly since the resistor provides a consistent engine coolant temperature reading within required temperature range.
- To install the resistor, ensure ignition is off. Disconnect ECT sensor connector. ECT sensor is located near engine coolant filler cap. See Figure.
- Note battery temperature value displayed on scan tool. Select proper 1/2 watt resistor with correct resistance value that will bring engine coolant temperature to within 10°F (5.6°C) of battery temperature reading. See RESISTOR SELECTION table.RESISTOR SELECTION

Insert resistor into ECT sensor harness connector in place of ECT sensor.
- On A/C equipped models, turn A/C on and set at maximum so cooling fan will come on when engine is running. On models not equipped with A/C, using jumper wire, apply battery voltage to cooling fan so cooling fan will come on when engine is running. See See appropriate ELECTRIC COOLING FANS article in ENGINE COOLING.
- On all models, turn ignition on. Confirm that engine coolant temperature reading on scan tool is within 10°F (5.6°C) of battery temperature reading. Clear any stored DTCs from PCM and then continue with readiness test procedures. See TEST NTC-49: READINESS TEST .
CAUTION:
To prevent damaging ECT sensor harness connector, use only a 1/2 watt resistor (Radio Shack or equivalent) which has the correct lead diameter to properly fit in ECT sensor harness connector.
