Camshaft Position Sensor (3.0L)

Camshaft position sensor may be referred to as Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor. Camshaft position sensor is located inside the distributor with connector located on side of distributor. Camshaft position sensor contains a Hall Effect device referred to as a sync signal generator. Sync signal generator detects rotation of pulse ring located on inside of distributor. See Fig 1 .

When leading edge of pulse ring enters sync signal generator, the interruption of magnetic field causes camshaft position sensor output voltage of approximately 5 volts. When trailing edge of pulse ring leaves sync signal generator, camshaft position sensor output voltage decreases to a low voltage. Camshaft position sensor delivers input signal to Powertrain Control Module (PCM). PCM uses this input signal along with input signal from crankshaft position sensor for determining crankshaft position for fuel injection synchronization and cylinder identification.
