Airbag System
A DRBIII(R) scan tool is required for diagnosis of airbag system. See BODY CONTROL COMPUTER article for more information.
- Disconnect and isolate battery negative cable. If airbag system is undeployed, wait two minutes for system capacitor to discharge before further service.
- Connect DRBIII(R) scan tool to 16-way data link connector. The connector is located under lower left edge of instrument panel, outboard of steering column. See Fig 1 .
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Exit vehicle with DRBIII(R) scan tool. Use latest version of DRBIII(R) scan tool.
- After checking that nobody is inside vehicle, reconnect battery negative cable.
- Using DRBIII(R) scan tool, read and record active Diagnostic Trouble Code(s) (DTC's) data.
- Read and record any stored DTC's data.
- Refer to proper Body Diagnostic Procedures manual if any DTC is found in Step 5) or Step 6).
- Erase stored DTC's data. If any problems remain, stored DTC's data will not erase.
- With ignition switch still in ON position, make sure nobody is in vehicle.
- From outside of vehicle (away from airbags in case of an accidental deployment) turn ignition switch to OFF position for about ten seconds, and then back to ON position. Observe airbag warning lamp in instrument cluster. It should light for six to eight seconds, and then go out. This indicates that airbag system is functioning normally.
NOTE:
If airbag warning lamp fails to light, or lights and stays on, there is a system malfunction. Refer to proper Body Diagnostic Procedures manual to diagnose problem.
