Timing Chain Cover: Installation

  1. Be sure mating surfaces of chain case cover and cylinder block are clean and free from burrs. Crankshaft oil seal must be removed to insure correct oil pump engagement. Position a new cover gasket on block. See Figure. Rotate crankshaft until oil pump drive flats are vertical. Position oil pump inner rotor mating flats in same position as crankshaft drive flats. Install timing chain cover onto crankshaft. Ensure oil pump is engaged on crankshaft correctly or severe damage may result.
  2. Install timing chain cover screws and torque to 40 N.m (30 ft. lbs.). Install crankshaft oil seal. See Figure. Install crankshaft damper and pulley. If oil filter adapter was removed, install adapter using a new gasket to timing chain cover and torque screws to 11 N.m (95 INCH lbs.). If oil cooler lines were removed, install lines to oil filter adapter fittings.
  3. If equipped with A/C, install compressor mounting bolts to cover and block. Torque screws to 23 N.m (200 INCH lbs.). Install generator and torque screws to 40 N.m (30 ft. lbs.). Connect cam sensor electrical connector and generator wiring. Install accessory drive belt. Install air cleaner assembly. Fill cooling system and connect battery.
