Test 12A - Bus Short To Ground

NOTE: For connector terminal identification see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Perform VERIFICATION TEST VER-1  after each repair.
CAUTION: Always turn ignition off prior to disconnecting any module connector.
  1. Connect backprobe jumper wire between Data Link Connector (DLC) ground terminals No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 5 (Black/Light Green wire). If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, repair open ground wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Transmission Control Module (TCM), if equipped. TCM is located at left fenderwell, next to power distribution center in engine compartment. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace TCM. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off and disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM). PCM is located next to air cleaner. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace PCM. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect anti-lock brake controller module. Anti-lock brake controller module is mounted on left inner fender panel. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace anti-lock brake controller module. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Overhead Travel Information System (OTIS) module 6-pin connector. OTIS module is mounted to headliner. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace OTIS module. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) head. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace ATC head. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC). Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace MIC. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition off and wait 5 minutes. Disconnect Air Bag Control Module (ACM) 23-pin connector. ACM is located under center console. Reconnect MIC. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace ACM. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, go to next step.
  9. Disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) connectors. BCM is connected to junction block. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace BCM. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, go to next step.
  10. Disconnect scan tool from Data Link Connector (DLC). Using external ohmmeter, measure resistance between ground and BCM Gray 14-pin connector terminal No. 14 (Yellow/Violet wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Yellow/Violet wire for short to ground. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace scan tool cable or scan tool as necessary.
