Ignition System: Distributor: Removal
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
CAUTION:
Base ignition timing is not adjustable on any engine. Distributors do not have build in centrifugal or vacuum assisted advance. Base ignition timing and timing advance are controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Because a conventional timing light cannot be used to adjust distributor position after installation, note position of distributor before removal.
- Disconnect negative battery cable.
- Remove air cleaner assembly and connecting tubes.
- Remove the spark plug cables and secondary ignition coil cable at distributor cap. Mark position of cables before removal. Position spark plug cables to the side of the engine.
- Remove distributor cap from distributor (2 screws).
- Mark the position of distributor housing in relationship to engine or dash panel. This is done to aid in installation. Before distributor is removed, the No. 1 cylinder must be brought to the top dead center (TDC) firing position.
- Attach a socket to the crankshaft vibration damper mounting bolt.
- Slowly rotate engine clockwise, as viewed from front, until indicating mark on crankshaft vibration damper is aligned to 0 degree (TDC) mark on timing chain cover.
- The distributor rotor should now be aligned to the cylinder No. 1 alignment mark (stamped) into the camshaft position sensor. If not, rotate the crankshaft through another complete 360 degree turn. Note the position of the No. 1 cylinder spark plug cable (on the cap) in relation to the rotor. Rotor should now be aligned to this position.
- Disconnect camshaft position sensor wiring harness from main engine wiring harness.
- Remove the distributor rotor from the distributor shaft.
- Remove distributor holddown clamp bolt and clamp. Remove the distributor from the vehicle.
CAUTION:
Do not crank engine with distributor removed. Distributor/crankshaft relationship will be lost.
