Alternator - Except BOSCH: Operation

Alternator diodes convert AC current to DC current. The SMEC monitors charging system input and output to ensure correct operation. The SMEC stores any charging system failures in memory and translates them into fault code when on-board diagnostics are entered.

The SMEC monitors several different engine control system circuits. If a problem is sensed within a monitored circuit, a fault code is stored in the SMEC memory, the check engine light will illuminate and system will enter limp-in mode. In limp mode, engine controller attempts to compensate for component or circuit failure by substituting information from other sources until repairs can be made.
