Check For Intermittent Failures
Faulty wiring and connections cause most intermittent failures. The problem must be duplicated to determine its cause. Since the SMEC remembers intermittents, the circuit actuation test mode (ATM) and sensor test modes can help locate them. If a fault code does not reappear, use the following procedure to locate the problem.
- If fault Code 41 does not reappear, use ATM Test Mode 09 and voltmeter as follows. Connect voltmeter positive lead to alternator output (Dark Green) wire and voltmeter negative lead to ground. Check for meter pulsations. Wiggle all connections and wires in circuit.
- When a bad connection or wire is located, the ATM test will stop. If a fault Code 16 or 44 does not reappear, use Sensor Test Mode 01 or 07. When in Test Mode 01 or 07, move all connectors and wires in circuit. When a bad connection or wire is located, display on DRB-II will change.
