NS15, Code 42 - Checking Auto Shutdown Relay

  1. Connect DRB II to engine harness connector. Connect voltmeter to Dark Blue/Yellow wire in auto shutdown relay 4-pin connector and ground. Put system in ATM Test Mode "06". If voltmeter pulsates between 0-12 volts, go to next step. If voltmeter reading is within one volt of battery voltage and system cannot be put in ATM Test Mode "06", go to step 6). If voltmeter reading is 0-1 volt steady and system cannot be put in ATM Test Mode "06", go to step 4).

  2. Connect voltmeter to Red wire in auto shutdown relay 4-pin connector and ground. If voltmeter reading is zero volts, repair Red wire for an open circuit to wiring harness splice. If voltmeter reading is within one volt of battery voltage, turn ignition off. Connect one end of jumper wire to Dark Green/Black wire of auto shutdown relay 4-pin connector.

  3. Touch other end of jumper wire to Red wire in auto shutdown relay 4-pin connector. If fuel pump turns on, replace auto shutdown relay. If fuel pump does not turn on, repair Dark Green/Black wire in auto shutdown relay connector for an open circuit to wiring harness splice.

  5. If voltmeter reading is zero volts, turn ignition off. Disconnect 14-pin connector from SMEC. Connect ohmmeter to 14-pin connector cavity No. 3 and Dark Blue/White wire of auto shutdown relay 4-pin connector. If there is no continuity, repair Dark Blue/White wire in 14-pin connector cavity No. 3 for an open circuit to auto shutdown relay. If there is continuity, replace SMEC for a defective power board. Before replacing SMEC, ensure terminal in connector cavity No. 3 is not damaged causing a poor connection.

  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect 60-pin connector from SMEC. Connect voltmeter to Dark Blue/Yellow wire in 60-pin connector cavity No. 58 and ground. Turn ignition on. If voltmeter reading is zero volts, repair Dark Blue/Yellow wire for an open circuit to auto shutdown relay. If voltmeter reading is within one volt of battery voltage, replace SMEC. Before replacing SMEC, ensure terminal in connector cavity No. 58 is not damaged causing a poor connection.
