Charging System Control

The SMEC monitors battery voltage and charging system voltage. Some circuits are monitored continuously, while other circuits are checked only under specific operating conditions.

If a circuit fails the test sequence, the SMEC will enter "LIMP-IN" mode, will turn on the "CHECK ENGINE" light, and will substitute a value in place of the failed value. The following conditions will cause the SMEC to enter the "LIMP-IN" mode:

• Battery Voltage Sense  - If battery voltage signal drops below 4 volts after engine has run for a least one minute. The SMEC will cause the charging system to operate at a fixed rate.
• Battery Voltage Too High  - If battery voltage exceeds the predetermined control voltage by one volt.

The "CHECK ENGINE" light will be turned off, and the charging system will be returned to normal operating condition if the faults correct themselves during that current engine operating cycle.
