Pressure Test (All Models)

  1. Check fluid level in pump reservoir and refill as necessary. Check pump drive belt tension and adjust as required. Connect a pressure gauge with a shut-off valve (C-3309E) in the high pressure line between the pump and steering gear.
NOTE: Valve must be on outlet side of gauge.
  2. Place a thermometer in pump fluid reservoir, start engine and warm fluid to 150-170°F (turning wheels from lock-to-lock will aid in warm up; DO NOT hold wheels against stops).
  3. With engine at specified idle RPM and gauge valve open, note pressure indicated on gauge while turning steering wheel from lock-to-lock. Turn wheels all the way to the stop momentarily and note pressure. Minimum pressure must not be lower than specifications. If pressure is low, perform test in step 4)  .
  4. Close gauge valve momentarily and note gauge pressure while valve is closed. If this pressure is less than higher specified pressure, pump is faulty and should be overhauled. If pressure is now correct but was low in step  3), steering gear is faulty and should be overhauled. Remove test equipment and reconnect hoses.
