Valve Clearance

  1. With engine at normal operating temperature, remove cylinder head cover. On 1.0L models, turn engine in direction of rotation until mating mark on flywheel is aligned with mating mark on bellhousing. See Figure . On 1.3L and 1.6L models, align notch on crankshaft pulley with indicator on timing belt cover.
  2. On all models, ensure cylinder No. 1 is at TDC of compression stroke and that rocker arms of cylinder No. 1 are free. The No. 1 cylinder is first cylinder at timing belt end of engine.
  3. On 1.0L models, adjust No. 1 and No. 3 intake valves and No. 1 and No. 2 exhaust valves to specification using a feeler gauge. See VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT  table.
  4. Turn engine in direction of rotation 360 degrees. Adjust intake valve on cylinder No. 2 and exhaust valve on cylinder No. 3 to specifications using a feeler gauge. Install engine cylinder head cover. Tighten cover retaining bolts to 70-104 INCH lbs. (8-12 N.m).
  5. On 1.3L and 1.6L models, adjust No. 1 and No. 2 intake valves and No. 1 and No. 3 exhaust valves to specification using a feeler gauge. See VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT  table.
  6. Turn engine in direction of rotation 360 degrees. Adjust No. 3 and No. 4 intake valves and No. 2 and No. 4 exhaust valves to specification using a feeler gauge. Install engine cylinder head cover. Tighten cover retaining bolts to 70-104 INCH lbs. (8-12 N.m) on Charade and 23-46 INCH lbs. (2-4 N.m) on Rocky.
VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT (1)

Model Cold: In. (mm) Hot: In. (mm)
1.0L (Int. & Exh.) 004-.008 (.10-.20) .006-.010 (.15-.25)
1.3L & 1.6L
Intake .007 (.18) .008-.012 (.20-.30)
Exhaust .010 (.25) .011-.015 (.28-.38)
(1) Valves should be adjusted with engine temperature greater than 176°F (80°C). If adjusted cold, valves must be readjusted after engine reaches normal operating temperature.
