Bench Testing: Inspection: Commutator

  1. Standard commutator diameter is 1.10" (28.0 mm) on 1.0L and 1.18" (30.0 mm) on 1.3L and 1.6L. If runout is more than .016" (.40 mm) on 1.0L or .002" (.05 mm) on 1.3L and 1.6L, turn commutator on a lathe until runout is as specified. See STARTER SPECIFICATIONS  table at end of article.
  2. Wear or cut limit of commutator is 1.06" (27.0 mm) on 1.0L and 1.14" (29.0 mm) on 1.3L and 1.6L. On all vehicles, if commutator wear is less than .008" (.20 mm), undercut insulating mica to a depth of approximately .024" (.60 mm).
